The area of Normandy was mostly developed during the Norman conquest of 1066, and the primary architectural style of the region is Norman, with some exceptional examples of Norman architecture to be found such as Chateau d'Etelan which was constructed in 1494 and the impressive Abbey of Jumièges, which was originally constructed in 654 and destroyed during the Norman conquest only to be rebuilt in Norman style by the Duke of Normandy in 942. One of the major attractions of the area is a small rocky island named St Michael's Mount which six around a kilometre off the north coast of Normandy and exhibits a very Italian or Roman architectural style, offering an interesting counterpoint to the surrounding Norman style of construction. St Michael's Mount has been used extensively as a film set throughout the last five decades and remains one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region of Normandy. |
